Second Annual Danyliw Research Seminar in Contemporary Ukrainian Studies Chair of Ukrainian Studies, University of Ottawa, 12-14 October 2006
The Chair of Ukrainian Studies, with the support of the Wolodymyr George Danilyw Foundation, is s pleased to invite you to attend the Second Annual Danyliw Research Seminar on Contemporary Ukraine at the University of Ottawa on 12-14 October 2006, under the direction of Dominique Arel, Chairholder. The Seminar will be held on University of Ottawa campus (Lounge 140, Residence Complex, 90 University. Thirty-four panelists, including ten graduate and post-doctoral students, will take part in the event. The Seminar will offer an impressive array of seventeen presentations touching on civil society in Ukraine, the sources of popular mobilization during the Orange Revolution, trust and informal practices, gender, the media and citizenship, as well as ethnicity, religion, and language use. A special section on The Energy Crisis in Ukraine, including a presentation by Adrian Karatnycky, President of the Orange Circle, is also on the program. The Danyliw Seminar Program is attached.
The Seminar is held in conjunction with a Workshop on Democracy and Civil Society in Ukraine organized by the Kennan Institute in Washington, DC - with the support of the Program of Research and Training on Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (Title VIII), the Wolodymyr George Danyliw Foundation, the Chair of Ukrainian Studies of the University of Ottawa, and the George F. Kennan Fund -and directed by Paul d'Anieri of the University of Kansas. All paper presentations of the Kennan Workshop are integrated into the Danyliw Seminar program. The Kennan papers will eventually appear in a book project.
The aim of the Danyliw Seminar is to provide a unique forum for researchers from Canada, the United States, Ukraine, Europe and elsewhere - from the disciplines of political science, anthropology, sociology, geography, economics and history - to engage in fruitful inter-disciplinary dialogue, disseminate cutting-edge research papers through the Chair web site, encourage publications in various outlets, and stimulate collaborative research projects.
